IQ Percentile Calculator

A percentile tells you what share of people score below you. On modern tests, an IQ of 100 is the 50th percentile, 115 is the 84th, 130 is the 98th and 145 is the 99.9th. Enter any score to convert it, or switch modes to find the IQ for a percentile.

84th percentile

High average · 1 in 6 score higher · 115 on the standard scale

In a room of 100 people, someone with an IQ of 115 would be smarter than 84 of them.

  • Outscored: 84
  • Would score higher: 16

Percentile to IQ on every common scale

Tests spread scores differently. The Wechsler scales and the Stanford-Binet 5 use a standard deviation of 15, older Stanford-Binet editions used 16, and the Cattell Culture Fair test uses 24, so the same rank produces three different numbers.

PercentileSD 15SD 16SD 24What it means
50th 100 100 100 Exactly average
75th 110 111 116 Top quarter
84th 115 116 124 One standard deviation above average
90th 119 121 131 Top 10%
95th 125 126 139 Top 5%, a cut-off some gifted programs use
97.7th 130 132 148 Two standard deviations: Mensa’s usual qualifying level (“top 2%”)
99th 135 137 156 Top 1%
99.9th 146 149 174 Top 0.1%, the Triple Nine Society’s level

That is why a Cattell score of 148 and a Wechsler score of 130 describe the same rank. Before you compare two results, check which scale each test used.

How IQ percentiles are calculated

IQ scores follow a bell curve with a mean of 100. To turn a score into a percentile, measure how far it sits from the mean in standard deviations (the z-score), then read off the share of the curve below that point.

  1. Find the z-score: (IQ − 100) ÷ 15. For an IQ of 120: (120 − 100) ÷ 15 = 1.33.
  2. Look up the normal curve: 0.9088 of the curve lies below z = 1.33.
  3. Convert to a percentile: 90.9%, so an IQ of 120 is the 91st percentile.
IQ · 120 7085100115130145
The shaded area is the share of people who score below 120: about 91%.

The calculator does the same for any score, and for other scales it swaps 15 for that test’s standard deviation. Going the other way, from a percentile to a score, runs the steps in reverse.

A percentile is not a percentage correct

Scoring at the 84th percentile means you did better than 84 out of every 100 people, not that you answered 84% of the questions. Good IQ tests include questions almost nobody can solve, so a high percentile often comes with plenty of wrong answers. On MyIQTest, harder questions also count for more, which the methodology explains.

What percentile do you need for Mensa or a gifted program?

Mensa accepts people who score in the top 2% on an approved, supervised test. That is usually 130 on the Wechsler scales, 132 on an SD 16 test and 148 on the Cattell. Many US school gifted programs use a similar line around 130, though some districts set it at the 95th percentile or combine several measures.

Higher-bar societies go further: the Triple Nine Society asks for the 99.9th percentile. See how these compare with the highest IQ scores ever recorded.

IQ percentile questions

What percentile is an IQ of 120?

An IQ of 120 is at the 91st percentile on the standard scale: higher than about 91% of people. Roughly 1 in 11 people score higher.

What IQ is the 90th percentile?

About 119 on a test with a standard deviation of 15, 121 on an SD 16 test and 131 on the Cattell scale (SD 24).

What IQ is the 99th percentile?

About 135 on the standard scale (SD 15). One person in 100 scores at or above it.

Is the 75th percentile a good IQ?

Yes. The 75th percentile is an IQ of about 110, the start of the high average range. You would score higher than three people in every four.

Why can’t a percentile be 100?

A percentile is the share of people who score below you, and nobody scores below themselves at the very top. Even a record score is the 99.99th-something percentile, which is why calculators cap the number instead of showing 100.

Do IQ percentiles depend on age?

Your IQ is already compared with people your own age: professional IQ tests have separate norms for each age band, so the same percentile means the same rank among your peers at 10 or at 60.
